Having just spent three days working in one of the craft pavilions at
Tasmania’s Agfest, the State’s annual Agricultural Show extravaganza, I am
always amazed at the many and varied ways in which individuals use their
creativity to connect both with their inner selves as well as others. Some are
following long-held dreams to find an alternative to the confines of the 9-5
rat race, having researched and honed their skills over many years to improve
the quality of their products. I discover things both bold and quirky, artistically
intricate, practical and decorative, sweet smelling and sweet tasting, and
wonder where the ideas came from to start these artisans on their chosen path.
I’ve always loved slow-motion films where you witness the birth of a
plant. Each insignificant seed buried in the cold earth could remain just that
and not do a thing, but with the right conditions, a little warmth, some
moisture, and suddenly everything changes. The outer layer can’t contain it any
longer. It splits, and the smallest shoot creeps out and heads skywards,
breaking the surface, using the power of the sun and whatever nourishment is
provided to grow to maturity and become what it was intended to be.
Given the right encouragement, the tiniest seeds of our ideas have the
capacity to thrive and change our lives as well as those of others, if we but
choose to believe they can.
Ideas
feel them germinate
nurture them
