Full Moon

I’ve just spent an inordinate amount of time consulting Mr Google on moon rise and setting times, phases, eclipses, supermoons and micromoons, blue, red and blood moons, plus a whole range of interesting facts and terminology related to that great orb of rock which has the capacity to both fascinate and inspire us. Too cold to go out on a werewolf hunt, but I can admire it just the same.

Fog filled valley floor
chilling, reflecting white light
from the cold full moon

Come Fly Away

Like steady rainfall
cascading leaves weave a rich
plush magic carpet

My neighbour’s gingko biloba tree beckons me outside. It’s vibrant golden yellow is startling. I know I’ve gone on a bit lately about the remarkable nature of autumn, but I do feel a stronger connection with this season more than any other. Most autumn leaves are now past their prime, having displayed their brightest and best and are now living out their last days before rotting down during winter and becoming plant fodder for the spring. I could wax lyrical about their beauty, but thought I would leave it to others who have expressed it more eloquently to have the last word.

I like autumn. The drama of it; the golden lion roaring through the back door of the year, shaking its mane of leaves. A dangerous time; of violent rages and deceptive calm...

- Joanne Harris from Gentlemen and Players

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower

Brain Food

The only problem I have with buying a packet of mixed nuts is the pile of walnuts left over at the end. No way am I going to eat those things that leave a very nasty taste in my mouth. They may be good for you but their striking resemblance to a part of the anatomy puts me right off. I vowed long ago never to eat any spare parts, no liver, no tripe, no kidneys even if it is with steak in a pie, no tongues, no ears or trotters, and especially no brains. I ain’t gonna eat what some other creature has been thinking with.

Plateful of rat’s brains
such diabolical things
bitter aftertaste
