Yesterday’s future
is today, just as today
is tomorrow’s past
Tomorrow never comes they
say, for when that minute hand passes midnight, it’s today. Unlike yesterday,
which along with all the other yesterdays that preceded it, is always with us.
Whatever happened, for good or ill, can’t be undone. We can’t
un-see, un-hear or un-do things,
or take back what blurted from our mouths. We can seek forgiveness if needed,
but those moments have been laid down on our brain’s recording mechanism. And
on our hearts.
Our memory banks are full of
moments that have become part of how we see ourselves and where we fit in the
world, or maybe how we believe we don’t fit. From our earliest memories, we
glean our sense of family and whether or not it is a safe and loving place. Those
early years provide the basis for the way we encounter the world beyond the
four walls of home, and unless something comes from left field to turn that on
its head, our approach to life is not necessarily set in concrete, but is often
set on a path with only a minimal margin of divergence allowable. It takes a
strong character to go against the flow, not impossible but you have to paddle
hard.
Our lives are filled with
joys and sorrows, challenges both exciting and traumatic, the ebbing and
flowing of friendships, relationships, loss of loved ones, the stability or
otherwise of physical, financial, emotional, mental and spiritual health. They
all have an impact on how we view the world. We draw on our memories from time
to time, some of which bring comfort and a smile to our face, while others are
covered with scar tissue and sore to the touch.
The past doesn’t have to
define us. Tomorrow gives us hope. There is always the possibility of a new
beginning, the righting of wrongs, the setting out on a new path, but it has to
begin and continue in the present.
