There's the world wide web, a web of lies, your average spider's web, and then there's this. Bang in the middle of nowhere, well, it was obviously somewhere, was this lone bush looking for all intents and purposes like it had been attacked with a can of spray foam.
What sort of spider creates a home like this? It was both curiously fascinating and somewhat daunting to edge closer for a more thorough inspection. Not content with the usual style of delicate and intricate web making, this visitor had gone all out and made about as bold a statement as a spider can.
Why had this one bush been singled out for such attention? Were all the others nearby unsuitable, or were the prickles a sure sign it would be safe and sound? Was there just one of this weird species of arachnid roaming around the bush, or were his mates about to come crawling from wherever to terrorise the locals? Was it watching me? Was it going to launch itself out of its cottonwool fortress and attack me if I dared poke at its handiwork? Did one spider manage all this, or was there a whole colony hiding in there?
I stood there for ages pondering these questions and more, and came to the conclusion that as spider webs go, it was a true masterpiece, and with that I was content to leave him in peace.
Strange anomaly
arachnophobic nightmare
or spider heaven
