Paddock to Plate

Chubby lambs
fattening up on
lush Spring grass

I love watching the Spring lambs grow from gangly legged infants to the stage they’re at now, where they frolic around the paddock in small groups like a bunch of kinder kids let loose in the playground, their tails still intact and wriggling. They grow so quickly, and it’s easy to be charmed by these bounding woolly bodies as you drive past, so it’s hard to imagine such cuteness being destined for the dinner plate.
But if you’re the farmer there’s no question of getting emotionally attached to them, no matter how cute, otherwise you’d go out of business and starve quick smart, for that’s the cycle of life on the farm. Just like any farmer, whether it be livestock or crops, you buy, you grow, you sell, and hopefully make a profit so you can keep the momentum going, as well as feeding the countless number of mouths in homes, cafes and restaurants that expect you to do your job well and produce a premium product.

Haven’t eaten lamb for a very long time. I prefer to see them in their original state.
