Life's Seasoning

Add flavour
enhance the goodness
be the salt

Salt. The most basic of additives. We can spice up our cooking with all manner of herbs and spices from every corner of the globe, giving dishes their unique Asian or French or Italian or whatever cuisine characteristics. However, in the absence of such variety, it is salt we rely on to take away blandness and enhance the flavour. The smallest pinch of salt can accentuate the goodness of a dish, making it more favourable to the palate and pleasing to consume.

Salt can preserve, as well as heal. I remember having salt baths after childbirth to assist healing and ward off infection, and no doubt we’ve all had our fair share of salt mouth washes after dental treatment and gargling with salt water for throat infections, and probably many more variations for all sorts of ailments.

We are supposed to be salt and light in the world, being part of the solution instead of part of the problem. If only we could be one of those who add flavour to the world around us instead of making it bland and apathetic, who accentuate the goodness, who preserve the values we know to be true, who bring healing where it is most needed, what a difference it would make.

May we not only aspire to that, but take steps in some way to actually be that.
