For 22 years, the Tasmanian Quilters Guild have been coming to Poatina
for their annual retreat, valiantly designing, cutting, pinning, stitching,
laying out, machining, and ironing while snacking and generally having a good
time together sharing the enjoyment of their craft as well as each other’s
company.
Saturday’s “Show and Tell” is always a treat for us in the village, marvelling at how much these intrepid women manage to achieve in just four days, seeing new quilts begin to take shape, catching up with projects begun on previous retreats, and admiring finished quilts, some of which have taken thousands of hours to complete. Piecing together hundreds and sometimes thousands of teeny tiny pieces into a cohesive whole is a real art. The dedication is mind boggling, the results awe inspiring.
The movie How to make an American
Quilt starring Winona Ryder as a somewhat anxious bride-to-be brought
together a group of women who shared their love and wisdom as they collaborated
in making a wedding quilt for the couple. As in the movie, I see our Tassie
quilters doing the same thing, investing something of who they are into each
quilt, so that each recipient not only receives a beautifully crafted item, but
shares in the love that went into its making.
